If you’re like most of us, we don't think about our windshield wipers until it is raining or snowing. We turn them on and expect them to help us see better in poor weather. But there always comes a time when you turn those windshield wipers on and aren’t happy with how they are working. They just don’t clear the rain and snow off the window in an even pattern and might even leave wide streaks of moisture behind.
We know how important our windshield wipers are and wish we had paid more attention to them, because otherwise we could possibly get in an accident and ruin our safe driving record with the insurance company. How can you take care of those windshield wipers?
1. Check your car's windshield wipers at least once per month. Carefully lift the arm off the glass and run your finger along the rubber edge. If you feel places where it is chipped off or it's hard, you need to replace your windshield wiper blades. (By the way, you can have your windshield wipers replaced at any place that changes your oil. You can also go to an auto supply store and some of them will replace them for free once you purchase the replacement wipers.)
2. If your windshield wipers ever freeze to the window, don't pull them off the ice. This will cause chipping and you will need to replace them. Run the defroster until they are free or use a de-icer to free them.
3. Use your windshield wipers at least once a month, twice a month is best. Use your window washer fluid, or put water on your windshield and let them work for a minute. This helps keep them in shape.
4. If your windshield wipers have been cleaning up the bugs or bird droppings that hit your window, be sure and clean the wiper blades. Take a soft cloth with a little dishwashing detergent and gently clean them. That will help keep the grime from damaging your windshield wipers.
Help keep yourself accident free by paying attention to those windshield wipers. It only takes a few minutes of your time.
